Which Digital Camera Is Right For You?

Should choosing the right digital camera for you really be that difficult a question? It shouldn't, but it quite often is. You could of course just plunge right in, and grab the first camera the salesman offers (within budget of course). Some fatalistic souls would argue, that digital camera technology has risen to the point where it's pretty hard to buy a bad camera today, so don't waste your time shopping around. Not me.

Fortunately for you, I'm not one of those that subscribe to that belief. While it's true that technology and stiff competition have produced some truly outstanding digital cameras, there's still a few guidelines that the savvy consumer live by.

Buy Panasonic Lumix

Don't pay for extras you won't use. This may seem like an obvious enough axiom, but a difficult one to put into practice, when camera manufacturers rev up their marketing engines to convince you of your need for the latest and greatest whatever. With digital cameras, it's generally megapixels. I've said it before, and I'll say it again - "pay no attention to the megapixel ratings of any camera you look at". It just doesn't matter anymore. They pretty much all have 6MP or over, and that's plenty for 90% of all photographers.

If your really looking for a real specification to consider, check out image sensor size. You won't find it plastered on the front of the camera packaging. You'll have to look it up online, or ask an honest salesperson. Basically, the larger the better. Cameras that try to squeeze too many megapixels onto a small image sensor, generally end up degrading the image quality with too much image noise. In other words, if I was looking at a 10 megapixel camera vs a 8 megapixel camera and both had the same image sensor size, I'd pick the 8megapixel camera in a heart beat. Your bound to get much less image noise in your pictures, especially at the higher ISO settings.

While which digital camera is right for you may not be an obvious choice. But, with a little digging, you can find the right one that others will miss. It's really just a question of knowing what your looking for.
